The Beginning

BRIAN GOUGH AND WESLEY (WES) CURRIE

OUR FRIEND KENNY

JOSEPH BIRT, MAnaging DIRECTOR

Retiring from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service after 30 years of service, Dr. Brian Gough founded FRSNI, Ltd. in 2010.

Along with his friend and colleague Wes Currie, who also served within the NIFRS, they endeavoured to establish a team of qualified specialist consultants, each having a wide scope of expertise within the fire safety industry. Providing Fire Risk Assessments, Fire Safety Training, and Fire Safety Management within Northern Ireland, FRSNI was officially on its way to becoming a well known name within the sector.

Brian’s vision for FRSNI was very much a company rooted in its clients and community.

With an MSc in Fire Safety Engineering and an HNC in Fire Safety Studies, Brian’s qualifications along with his memberships of professional bodies, such as the prestigious Institution of Fire Engineers, made FRSNI a cut above in their knowledge and experience.

This, however, was just part of it. What mattered to Brian more, was that FRSNI had that moral compass, a social responsibility to their clients and their community.

Each year the FRSNI team set aside one day as our ‘Charity Day’.

All sales and profits raised by each team member on this day are donated to our chosen charity. Previously our efforts went to help the MacMillan Nurses, in memory of our much loved and respected friend and colleague Kenny McEwan who sadly passed away in 2018.

Joseph Birt became one of FRSNI’s technical directors in 2019. With more than 22 years building control experience, the latter 12 years of which were as the ‘Specialist Support Officer’ for the ‘South-Eastern Group of Councils’ which included responsibility for advising on the complex aspects of the Building Regulations; he is considered an expert in Fire Safety and design. He was two times Chair of the NI Multi-Agency Fire Safety Panel, and from 2022-2023 he took on the position as elected global President of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.

Trading Partners: In addition to our own specialist team members, FRSNI Ltd. has developed trading partnerships with McL Fire Ltd. and Quam Consulting Ltd. to significantly increase the range of fire safety services we can provide for our clients.

Remembering Richard Maze

It is with deep regret and heavy hearts, that we acknowledge the passing of our great friend and colleague Richard Maze.

Richard has been a stalwart of the FRSNI team since our inception almost 15 years ago where he was held in the highest esteem by everyone who knew him.  When undertaking his work, he always went the extra mile to optimise the safety of people who occupy the buildings he inspected; his approach was gentle, professional and always with a smile. He was softly spoken, but when Richard would speak the room would fall silent as all present without exception, would listen intently, knowing he would have the answer to any query, no matter how complex. Humble, but virtuoso.

Richard was a valued member of Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and served with the organisation for over 30 years, including as a Divisional Fire and Safety Officer for Northern Ireland. He was best known for his work in leading the review into the Stormont fire in 1995, which led him to lead the Northern Ireland Crown Inspection Team, which examined the fire safety of government buildings and helped write the Fire Safety Standards for Northern Ireland.

A Graduate of the Institution of Fire Engineers (GIFireE) with over 40 years of experience within the field of Fire Safety, Richard was FRSNI’s lead consultant in the field of specialist housing. He maintained his position as an expert over many decades by reading intently and staying on top of his subject matter.

A keen motorcyclist and wildlife enthusiast, Richard will always be remembered as a warm and kind person who brought positivity to every situation. He will always be held in high esteem by us; his warm smile will be sadly missed by all at FRSNI.

As we struggle to come to terms with Richard’s passing, our thoughts are foremost with his dearest wife Thelma, daughter Angela and son David, and family circle. For them the loss is greatest.
